Learning from Jan

Jan’s watercolor book & ebook

Every artist has his or her own way of painting as well as learning how to paint, how to grow as an artist. As a teacher, it is my job and privilege to provide encouragement, inspiration and lots of information that can be used by a student however he or she decides.

Watercolor Book and eBook

In 2007 my book, The Watercolor Artist’s Guide to Exceptional Color was published by Walter Foster, reprinted three times and is now out of print. Copies can still be found through re-sellers and used book stores. Sometimes available through Amazon.com at a reasonable price – it maintains its 4.6 customer ranking with 64 reader comments.

In 2012 I made a pdf format ebook available exclusively through my website. Click here to purchase book in my store!

Audio Slideshows

Legacy slide shows with audio

Following up on much of the information in the book, I created a series of 12 Legacy slide shows in pdf format with audio of my voice describing the contents. Four of the slide shows are demos and eight are informational that cover subjects I use in my paintings. These subjects include ‘painting water’, ‘painting rocks’, ‘understanding color basics’, etc. Visit the store.

Watercolor Painting Videos

Four watercolor painting videos are my most recent addition to help with learning about a watercolor painting process. The videos are meant to describe and show the in-depth process I use for painting – from start to finish. We set it up as a demo – with me and a student (my friend Sharron Harper) and we talked, painted, puzzled and critiqued our way through the three day process of doing one painting. Each part is about an hour long and available through the store. Click Here!

Additionally, I added a fourth video – doing a fast watercolor sketch with a beer! It shows us painting fast and loose and only for an hour – or until the beer is finished!
