Jan’s Words: Perhaps one of my favorite paintings of the rocks up at Echo Amphitheater! I had a passion for these red/pink, white and yellow gold sandstone cliffs that weave in and out of view along the rim around the Ghost Ranch valley.. I focused attention on the layered topography of the sandstone. The rocks were handled with mixes of cobalt blue, rose madder genuine and aureolin yellow to get the light, shade and shadows just right. I remember telling my students to think about a drop of water. Could it find its way to get from the top to the base? When I finished the painting I almost thought I could feel the water that helped sculpt the rock faces.
