Jan’s Words: Everywhere in Costa Rica, wherever there are cattle grazing there are also cattle egrets. Occasionally one is fortunate to see an egret perched on the back of its symbiotic partner. Both are positively affected by the relationship – the grazing cow stirs up bugs for the egret and the egret picks off harmful ticks. Beyond the benefits, I sometimes sense a possibility of a spiritual connection. One could accuse me of anthropomorphism. But one could also reflect on the possibility that they are kindred spirits.
