Jan’s Words: Black Mesa stands upon the lands of both the Santa Clara and the San Ildefonso pueblos near Española, New Mexico. It was nearly in my backyard and a favorite subject during my time in NM. I painted this with the chamisa bush in the foreground, hoping to capture the beauty and simplicity of northern New Mexico. This one remained in my collection – unfinished until now when I finished the memorable adobe church that sits alone beneath the mesa.
