Jan’s Words: I have painted these beautifully exposed ginger tree roots several times over the years – always to once again struggle to get the light and shadows working on the sun bleached roots that spread out like tentacles bathed in sunlight. Most of the tree was in shade. There were ample opportunities to see and paint the bounced light that produced yellows and subtler oranges. And then there were the finely textured leaves and stones on the earth. And everywhere, dappled dots of sunlight. I could probably enjoy painting these roots at least a dozen times more.
