Jan’s Words: I painted two paintings from this photo–this one first. I used a limited tetradic color palette and focused a lot on the leafy background that is such a pervasive shelter and resource for the three toed sloth. And yes, the unique form of the sloth head and ‘face’ makes it appear that it is almost smiling. I’m pretty sure that is not always how they feel, especially when they are stressed. They remain one of Costa Rica’s most endearing animals.
