Jan’s Words: In the world of animal spirit totems, the symbolism of the sloth is often suggested as ‘laziness, lack of ambition, etc”  But  there is also a deeper reference to sloths as the keepers of wisdom. One reference I found went on to say the sloth gets its wisdom from the trees. So that is what I wanted to portray in this painting. When I put the nearly finished painting up for critique in an Intensive, a student remarked that it looked like the sloth was physically connected to the tree. My response was “yes, the sloth and the tree are almost one”.
