Jan’s Words: I had a gorgeous flock of hens with a rooster when I lived in New Mexico. I loved the gathering when I dropped a handful of food for them on the grass. They gathered to eat – a perfect surprise dinner for chickens. In painting them I was particularly interested in the light, shade and shadow and especially hoping to achieve the soft under tail feathers. And for this painting I added a few touches of dry pastel.
