Jan’s Words: There, at the edge of the sand were these varied and defiant bushes and trees. They were a perfect subject for a demo about brushstrokes and loose, direct painting. I was teaching a workshop in Delaware in 2005. I used my two favorite brushes – a ¾” flat wash brush and a rigger! The pointed edge of the wash brush can do so much – from dancing strokes to flat glazes – and the rigger does its magical calligraphy in between. It was a dance with the brushes that produced a painting I’ve kept for many years.
