Jan’s Words: The light and effects of reflected light into the shaded parts of the rocks are quite extraordinary in the sandstone cliffs of Echo Amphitheater. The location became a favorite subject and place to paint during the years of my Ghost Ranch workshops. (1995 – 2007) It was even the color combination of these rocks that first drew me to New Mexico from Seattle, Washington when I saw them displayed in a painting by Georgia O’Keeffe. Here in this painting I thought about the foreground sage and decided that the lighted tips of the leaves could just continue upward onto the lighted edges of the rock. A path of light, which turned out to be an idea I used in paintings from then on.
