Jan’s Words: Painted five years after I did my first sloth painting, I painted the climbing sloth again–this time concentrating more on the sloth and texture. The wiry fur of the sloth helps shield it from view as well as weather variations like hot sun and hard tropical downpours. In fact the sloth’s fur supports habitats for moths and various insects as well as algae that often give the fur a greenish color. The sloth is almost an extension of the forest habitat. I wanted to incorporate what I knew into this painting by weaving the fur into the forested background.
