Jan’s Words: It was a breakthrough of sorts for me. During a workshop in New Mexico entitled, ‘Painting the Abstract’, I experimented with a kind of pointillist approach with a photo of some flowers. I painted directly, mixing paints only on the paper – and using only my ½ “ flat wash brush with its sharp edges and full base. Going from color to color I just let my brush dance into the shapes. I loved it – and it was the beginning of what I called ‘the dancing stroke’ that I would continue to use.
