Jan’s Words: A favorite subject of mine – my great flock of chickens when I lived in Española, NM. For a time I had a rooster among the hens whose name was Pepe. So often, while the hens were concentrating on eating or examining something in the grass, Pepe was busy looking elsewhere or strutting about. And often he was just crowing, as in this painting. It always makes me smile when I think of Pepe and the very special hens he looked over.
