Jan’s Words: Painted during one of my favorite Intensives, these are the trees that are just below my house on the hill. How fortunate I feel to have this last vestige of the forested past still standing and thriving. When I arrived ten years ago, there were coffee fields around these trees. Now there are grasses that feed the Brahmins and egrets. But the real beauty of the stand of trees is found in its branches. Sloths live there, only to be seen by the diligent watcher. And the incredible array of birds that fly into and out of its branches. Included are flocks of white fronted parrots, vultures, laughing falcons, caracaras, squirrel cuckoos, toucans, toucanets and too many kinds of tanagers to list. I wanted to pay tribute to these neighbor trees in deep gratitude.
