Jan’s Words: This painting was begun in 2010 – early on in my Costa Rica life. I photographed the Capuchine monkey in a rare moment when it was not looking at the camera. I got into the painting pretty well and almost finished it. But I found that I had trouble finishing the face. For some reason I put the painting away for eight years. When I looked at it again I decided to see what I could do with the face. The photo reference was long gone. But to my astonishment, the painting felt like it painted itself. And suddenly I saw the entire painting differently. I recognized the rarity of seeing a Capuchine monkey seemingly absorbed in what it was doing. It felt private. I added a bit more to the foliage, named it “In the Moment” and called it complete.
