Jan’s Words: I had just ordered one of my favorite things on the menu at Papas – Cordon Bleu, or as it is often translated and printed here in Costa Rica ‘Gordon Blue’. Before me was the magnificent Traveler’s Palm tree, which isn’t really a palm tree at all. It is more closely related to the Bird of Paradise. The Traveler’s Palm has a distinctive fan shape that is said to align along an east-west axis which can provide a natural compass bearing to a jungle hiker. The pattern of the huge, overlapping leaves in the sun was a fascinating subject I could not resist. So I sketched it while waiting for my lunch. And I finished it after. Yum.
